Lauren & Aaron’s Surprise Birthday Proposal at the Top of the Frozen Waterfall in Big Sky, Montana

When Aaron first reached out to me about photographing a “couple session” while he and Lauren were visiting Montana, I could hear the excitement in his voice right away. Then he told me the best part: today was Lauren’s birthday, and he was going to propose during the session. He wanted the moment to be a complete surprise—she had no idea a ring was coming.

We met at the trailhead on a bright, crisp winter afternoon. Lauren was all smiles, thinking we were just there to capture some fun couple photos on her birthday trip. She had no clue what Aaron had planned. Before we started hiking.

When we reached the top of the frozen waterfall, the view opened up in the most breathtaking way. Aaron took Lauren’s hands, looked her in the eyes, and dropped to one knee.

The moment was pure magic.

Lauren’s hands flew to her face in total shock. Laughter, pure joy, it was all there at once. She said “YES!” so loud it probably echoed across the valley.

Right after the proposal, we spent the next hour celebrating with more photos, Lauren kept staring at her ring, then at Aaron, then back at the ring again, still in happy disbelief that her birthday surprise had turned into forever. The frozen waterfall made the perfect backdrop: icy blues and whites against their warm winter jackets and even warmer smiles.
