Some places just make a love story feel a little more adventurous.

For this engagement session, my couple made the trip all the way from Minnesota to Montana, turning their engagement photos into part of a bigger adventure. They road-tripped to Big Sky and chose Lone Mountain Ranch as the backdrop for this chapter of their story.

And honestly, I couldn’t think of a better way to remember the trip.

From Minnesota to Montana

There’s something special about traveling somewhere new for your engagement photos. Instead of simply showing up for a photo session, you get to turn the experience into a memory you’ll carry with you.

These two traveled from Minnesota to Montana, taking in the mountains, the scenery, and everything that makes Big Sky such an incredible place to slow down and enjoy the moment.

Their session at Lone Mountain Ranch felt relaxed, natural, and completely about the two of them.

No need for stiff poses or spending the entire session looking at the camera. We walked, laughed, explored, and let the moments happen naturally.

Engagement Photos at Lone Mountain Ranch

Lone Mountain Ranch is such a beautiful location for an engagement session. The Montana landscape gives you so much variety—from open mountain views to quiet little moments tucked away in the scenery.

But what I love most about photographing couples here isn't just the location.

It's watching a couple forget they're being photographed.

A hand reaching for the other person. A laugh that wasn't planned. Walking together and taking in the view. Those little in-between moments are often the photographs that become your favorites.

For me, engagement photography isn't about turning your relationship into a photoshoot. It's about giving you photographs that feel like you while creating a memory you actually enjoyed making.

Make Your Engagement Session Part of the Adventure

If you're traveling to Montana for your engagement photos, don't be afraid to make a whole experience out of it.

Road-trip here.

Stay a few extra days.

Explore Big Sky.

Grab coffee, hike, relax, and take in the mountains.

Then let your engagement session become one part of the adventure.

Years from now, you'll have more than beautiful photographs. You'll remember the trip you took, the places you explored, and what it felt like to be there together.

That's what makes destination engagement sessions so meaningful to me.

Whether you're traveling from Minnesota, another state, or you're already here in Montana, I'm all about creating photographs that feel natural, honest, and true to your relationship.

And you definitely don't have to spend your entire day taking photos.

I'll help guide you when you need it, while leaving plenty of room for you to simply enjoy the experience.

Big Sky & Bozeman Proposal Photographer: Surprise Engagement at Ousel Falls

Planning a surprise Big Sky proposal or Bozeman engagement while visiting Big Sky and Bozeman? I captured a heartfelt winter proposal at Ousel Falls — even though the waterfall wasn’t frozen! See how this couple got engaged on a snowy hike with the falls roaring behind them, all photographed naturally in plain sight. Real emotions, stunning Montana scenery, and the perfect “yes” moment.

If you’re visiting Big Sky and Bozeman and searching for a Big Sky proposal photographer or Bozeman engagement photographer who knows how to capture a truly natural, surprise Montana proposal, this real story from Ousel Falls might be exactly what you’re looking for.

A few weeks ago I got a message from a guy planning the perfect surprise proposal during a winter ski trip in Big Sky. He wanted it to feel completely private, just the two of them, yet still wanted beautiful photos. He’d found Ousel Falls online and loved the idea of the scenic waterfall backdrop. He asked if I could already be at the location when they arrived.

I told him Ousel Falls was an ideal choice for a Big Sky proposal. I’d hike in early, set up like any other landscape photographer, and wait in plain sight so everything felt organic and stress-free, perfect for couples visiting Big Sky and Bozeman who want their special moment to feel effortless.

Hiking into Ousel Falls on a Bluebird Montana Morning

The day of the proposal was one of those perfect Big Sky days. I laced up my boots and made the easy hike to the falls so I could be ready and waiting. I set up my camera, framed some test shots of the landscape, and simply blended in with the handful of other hikers enjoying the trail.

Just me, my camera, and the trail—exactly the low-key approach couples want when they’re visiting Big Sky and Bozeman for a Big Sky or Bozeman surprise proposal.

The Moment Everything Came Together at Ousel Falls

I spotted them coming up the path. They walked just ahead.

Then they turned toward the falls—and that’s when I saw his brief look of surprise.

Ousel Falls was not frozen. The water was rushing full force, sparkling in the sunlight and carving through the snow with a powerful roar. The location was still perfect, just in a different, more vibrant way.

Right there on the snowy overlook he dropped to one knee. Her hands flew to her mouth. Laughter, the ring, and that joyful “YES!” I was already shooting—quietly and respectfully—capturing every genuine emotion while staying far enough back to give them complete privacy.

The unfrozen waterfall thundered behind them like its own celebration. It was raw, real, and absolutely unforgettable.

Post-Proposal Portraits & Celebration

we spent about twenty minutes taking a few relaxed portraits together. She was still glowing with shock and joy, he couldn’t stop smiling No crowds. Just the couple, the rushing water, the snow, and me quietly documenting one of the best days of their lives.

Why Ousel Falls Is One of the Best Spots for Big Sky & Bozeman Proposals

Ousel Falls continues to be one of my favorite locations for Montana engagements and proposals—especially for couples visiting Big Sky and Bozeman. It’s close enough to Big Sky Resort and Bozeman for an easy half-day adventure, offers stunning winter scenery (frozen or not), and gives couples the privacy they crave. Whether you’re visiting Big Sky for a ski trip, exploring Bozeman’s vibrant downtown and then heading into the mountains, or planning a romantic getaway any time of year, this trail delivers.

If you’re dreaming of a Big Sky proposal or Bozeman engagement that feels natural, stress-free, and beautifully photographed while you’re visiting Big Sky and Bozeman, I’m here for it. I specialize in surprise proposals across Big Sky, Bozeman, and the surrounding Montana mountains. I’ll arrive early, blend in, and capture every real moment so you can focus on what matters most, her saying yes.
